Hey everyone! First off, I just want to say I have been perusing this section of the forum for a long time (and have found it extremely informative) but now I can hardly believe it is already time for me to be the one asking questions! A little background on me: I am happy with my numbers, and I definitely do not plan for a retake, but I am confused about my school list. I am not exactly sure what's worth applying for and how many reaches I should have. I'm not even sure what is a reach in my case! (I realize a 32 in one of those borderline scores between good/great/elite medical schools) I will be applying in the 2013-2014 cycle I go to a public school in Mississippi I have a 4.0 GPA 32R MCAT (11/11/10) Biochemistry Major/Psych Minor ECs are pretty decent in my opinion: Top Universi...

PGY-4 in General Surgery. Transferred out of my sucky previous program just to come into a horribly malignant program in which basically everyone hated my guts. Planning to go on military active duty for a few years. My questions on this forum are... 1. How much does my horrible recommendation from this year, just one, matter 3-4 years from now? Especially if I am planning on changing specialty? 2. Is it worth a while to stick it through the rest of year, especially when I am sure I will continue to get horrible evaluations? i.e. "medical knowledge is at MS-3 level" Any thoughts on this will be appreciated. Was reading the latest " bulletin of the FACS". And they are now promoting a pilot fellowship in general surgery. Designed for those graduating a gen surg residency who may need some more time gaining confidence to independently practice. Even more interesting is that they acknowledge the problem is due to work hour restrictions, fewer open operations, etc. Could this be the first step to prolonging residency? The ACS has created an official committee devoted to this problem. Is the real problem that the increasing work hr restrictions are finally catching up? Creating a culture of diffusion of responsiblity and signouts and now we have grads who cant practice surgery without a fellowship? (Source: Student Doctor Network Forums)

I thought a thread for IMG FMG and DO candidates applying for the 2013 match will be helpful to future candidates. Please state your status ( IMG FMG DO ) and interviews that you have received. Also if it was for a prelim or categorical spot. Anything you would like to share about the programs would be great too. Thank you. (Source: Student Doctor Network Forums)

Okay so I've been lurking for a few months and finally made an account. Im a freshman pre med student and im doing a research essay and i have to conduct a survey to gather some data. My topic is about how less people are wanting to practice family medicine these days and more people want to practice in certain specialties. So im going to list a few questions(really short and to the point actually) and if people can copy and paste the questions and put their answers next to them, it would really help a lot. haha  question 1: What specialty of medicine do you want to practice when youre a doctor(family, oncology, general surgery, etc.....) question 2: for what reason do you want to do practice in the area that you have chosen?(money, prestige, media, passion, etc....

I am looking for 3rd year clinical rotations away from my school (because I would like to be close to my girlfriend). I will be looking to find clerkships in New Mexico and Utah. How does one go about finding Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Pediatrics, Neurology, Psychiatry and General Surgery etc. clerkships? Do you just call doctors up...? "hey my name is..." or are there directories? It looks like the major hospitals are looking more for fourth years... I'm just looking for basic clerkships. (Source: Student Doctor Network Forums)

I'll be shooting for urology (originally set me goal on MD, never settled! - so hopefully if I set my goal high again I'll manage to make it happen) which is a very competitive specialty. But, what are your mindset heading into medical school career wise. From my experiences, I've met a nice mix of people (m1/m2/upper class pre-med/silly freshman pre-med). Rarely do you ever hear someone initially say they are shooting for family medicine/internal medicine... it always seems like derm, cards, CT surg, ortho, or gas. I'm interested to see what your goals are. I would like designate this for the MS0's.... but that won't happen, freshman dreamers will vote anyways. For the purposes of the poll - Highly Competitive: Plastics, Derm, Radonc, Ortho, Uro, Optho, Neurosurgery, Otolaryngology N...

''Foreign Medical Graduates must have full training in general surgery, i.e., Board Eligible, as determined by the American Board of Surgery, before starting training in Plastic Surgery. Hello everyone, I'm trying to choose among these three options, and after a lot of deliberation and consultation with friends and family, I'm still pretty torn. I've created a list of pros and cons for each school University of Colorado Pros -Highest ranked among all three in research, which I'm interested in (35th) -Many tracks to get involved in (global health, urban health, advocacy and health policy, etc) -Very close to Denver -Brand new facilities. -Patient diversity Cons -COA: $83,000/year. Cannot get IS tuition after first year. Only received $10,000 in grants. -Too many non-trads. I'm 24 and I believe a good chunk of the class is married and/or is in a serious relationship. I'm still used to the college atmosphere of everyone still not being that committed. -Most of the class...

What are articles every surgery resident should be familiar with? Landmark study's in the fields general surgery residents rotate through? (Vascular - NASCET trial, ACAS trial, etc...) Is there a resource to help identify these, or is it only as you read/rotate through the specialties, you become familiar with these study's? (Source: Student Doctor Network Forums)

I am interested in pursuing thoracic surgery, as I have been shadowing a wide range of doctors. In the military, I worked with several primary care physicians and anesthesiologists. After the military, I shadowed extensively (near 150 hours) IM physicians and cardiologists. As of now, I am shadowing an ENT, Gastro, and a thoracic surgeon. Thus far, thoracic surgery is really appealing. Therefore, I would like to inquire about osteopathic general surgery residency programs that have the potential to catapult an individual into a great thoracic surgery fellowship. I know the number of osteopathic fellowships are sparse, so please elucidate on ACGME fellowships that have admitted an osteopathic physician. Also, does anyone know whether or not a D.O. has been admitted to an integrated allopa...

I'm still interested in learning all I can, so big bits of help would be greatly appreciated. With that said, I'll begin my topic. I want to become a cardiac surgeon. I've taken a strong interest in the last few years in the medicine field, but just recently I have decided to pursue the path of cardiovascular surgery. I have purchased Gray's Anatomy and a new textbook called Anatomy and Physiology: From Science to Life, which I have avidly begun reading. I love learning about anatomy in general, but I take an extraordinary interest in the heart and all that involves it. I'm 15 and would graduate in 2014 at 18, but I'm going...

I am going to start the osteopathic medical school at ATSU-KCOM with pride and honor. I have talked a lot of current OMS during my interview day and most of them are planned to take both COMLEX and USMILE. Their simple reason to take both was to be more competitive for the match and possibly get M.D. residency. I am not still fully understanding of why taking USMILE as DO med students. For example, if I want to get into the general surgery residency in the future, do you highly recommend me to take both boards? Any information is greatly appreciated! I'm a premedical student and, as is clearly implied in my user name, my intention is to enter the field of medicine in either neurosurgery or neurology due to my interest with the brain and the CNS. My primary goal is to become a neurosurgeon and I have some general questions about the grueling seven years that I would call myself a resident in said field: 1. Is the first year of residency simply general surgery? 2. Of what would a typical day "living the dream" consist? 3. About how much could I expect to be paid, strictly in residency, and would it be a low hourly wage or a salary based on a forty-hour work week? 4. I've heard that neurosurgeons in the making must nearly incessantly research. What literature would I be researching? Would I be reading solid-grounded, pu...

I'm currently doing a graduate degree in burn and plastic surgery at the West China Medical School in Sichuan. Would I still have to go through F1,F2 and general surgery to get into my field back in the UK? (I am a UK citizen, with a Chinese medical license) I'll probably end up coming back to China, but I would like the experience of working/training in the UK while hopefully making at least enough to live on. What sort of options are there? (Source: New Media Medicine)

I'm a final year medic, and I'm currently ranking the vast array of jobs in my deanery! At the moment, I'm considering a career in GP, Paeds or Anaesthetics, but am open minded and don't really want to close any doors at this early stage... At the top of my ranking list are 2 jobs with rotations in Paeds, Endocrinology and Diabetes, and General Surgery, which I'm very happy with. But there aren't many Paeds jobs in my deanery and the next 3 I've ranked have Trauma and Orthopaedics as opposed to general surgery. So... I'm wondering if this rotation (paeds, T&O and E&D) would look attractive to future employers? I've been told by a couple of doctors to keep my FY1 jobs general, but this rotation looks niche to me... As I said, I don't want to close any doors at this stage,...

I am just so confused about what I would like to do as a specialty, and I certainly am open to anything as long as it would fit me, so I figured the knowledge bank that is SDN would provide me with the answers! I am a person that likes to observe and think through a lot of things, and I love solving problems and new challenges, it's really fun for me to be stumped and try to solve it. But I also like doing things with my hands and have done quite a bit of animal surgery for research and I enjoy that. Also I love interacting with patients and the ability to follow up with patients is very important to me. So far, I feel like the only specialty would be surgical oncology, I know that is really specific, also that's really just a general surgery residency? I'm not sure so please help me! a...

Hey guys, I'm a SDN lurker and just created an account. So I started my first year pretty rough, I had a tough time adjusting to the amount of work and failed the first course: Anatomy. I just found the class so difficult, with so much crap to memorize and I couldn't quite adjust. I just hated that class with all my guts. And my study habits sucked too, I have to admit. But then the next three courses, Biochem, Cell Bio, Molecular Bio, I passed (our school is Pass/Fail). These courses were so freaking much better than Anatomy and I did okay in the exams for these classes. I'm pretty sure that I will be able to pass all the rest of my courses in M1. So my question is, if I successfully remediate my fail in Anatomy, what are my outlook at some of the more competitive specialties? The tra...

I think it is very sad that certain "ROAD" specialities are so desirable. Who the heck would go through so many years of training to be a derm or anes? I am a non trad getting ready to start a post bacc, and have the benefit of years of experience and reflection in the real world before starting this. Friends of mine who are doctors in other countries think it is some sort of a joke that some of the most qualified and talented American medical students fight tooth and nail to get lame "lifestyle" specialties because they want the most pay for the least work, and don't actually care about medicine. At present, I am most excited about general surgery, because of the challenge and variety and diversity of practice. I could see myself in a surgical subspecialty...
